The Buick LaCrosse was recently refreshed for model-year 2014, but it appears that the brand is hard at work on the next-gen model. Seen here is a next-gen Buick LaCrosse prototype, rumored to arrive in 2016.

The prototype has a similar roofline to the Chevrolet Impala, though the large and fancy wheels are a strong hint that this sedan is most likely a Buick. Additionally, its front-drive proportions suggests that the prototype is probably not a Cadillac, which makes sense given Caddy’s recent confirmation that it is producing a rear-drive flagship sedan by the end of next year.

With that said, this prototype is most likely the upcoming Buick LaCrosse that should ride on an updated version of General Motors’ Epsilon II platform that also underpins the Impala and Cadillac XTS. Expect a dramatic upgrade when it comes to exterior styling. In additional to the upscale wheels, the prototype is sporting a high beltline, wide haunches, and a panoramic glass roof.

The LaCrosse faces strong competition in the full-size, near-luxury sedan segment that currently includes the Toyota Avalon, Hyundai Azera, and the Kia Cadenza. The large sedan will also be part of Buick’s heavily revamped lineup which will see a number of refreshed and all-new models by 2017.
