Spied! Could This Prototype Preview a BMW M4 GTS?

There was so much anticipation built up for the BMW M3/M4, and now that they're finally here, we don't really have too much to be excited over besides the upcoming M2 -- except that the German automaker might just have something else up its sleeve. Spy photographers captured an M4 prototype looking a bit racier than normal.

Research

Up front, the M4 wears camouflage on its front valance, which suggests it's got something to hide under there. The same goes for the fixed rear wing around back, which also wears camouflage (as if that helps hide the giant spoiler mounted to the decklid). The previous BMW M3 GTS also sported a fixed rear wing, which could mean we're looking at a successor to that model. The race-ready M3 GTS, which wasn't available in the U.S., channeled the lightweight CSL version of the E46 M3. It lost some weight over the standard M3 and cranked the 4.0-liter V-8's power up from 414 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque to 444 hp and 324 lb-ft. The higher-performance M3 also boasted track-ready elements including a coil-over suspension, bigger brakes, steel-braided brake lines, and flat-black 19-inch M alloy wheels. Curiously, the car wore MotoGP "safety car" stickers when it was spotted on the Nürburgring and on the street. Our shooter notes that this safety car is unlike the other M4 safety cars, especially since this mule has a more pronounced lip spoiler. You won't find this tester's large rear wing on the other M4 safety cars used in the series, either. The stickers could be a ruse to throw us off the scent, or maybe BMW -- for whatever reason -- thinks its MotoGP safety cars need a giant rear wing next season. Until BMW has anything to say about a possible M4 GTS, we'll continue to keep our eyes peeled. What do you think the car in the gallery below is?
