Spy photographers caught a prototype for the Maserati Levante SUV out testing in Germany with a bit less camo than we saw on the test mule we spotted a few months ago. At this point, this bare-shouldered prototype looks like a lifted Ghibli.

Research

We originally expected Maserati's first SUV to share a platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but that has been ruled out. The new Levante will be based on the same platform that underpins the Maserati Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans. If there was ever any doubt about that, just take a look at this test mule, which is essentially just a raised Ghibli. The Maserati SUV won't have much Chrysler blood in it at all, as engines will be sourced from Maserati's two sedans, and the SUV will also use the lux brand's own Q4 all-wheel drive system.

The prototype features a higher ride and wider wheel arches than the Ghibli, but we expect the Levante will lose much of its Ghibli appearance as it continues to develop. The roof extension we see in these pics gives us a clue as to how the final Levante might look. The extra weight on the roof is used in testing to simulate a taller center of gravity, a feature we expect the Levante will eventually have as it morphs into a true SUV.

Expect the Maserati Levante to debut in September 2015 at the Frankfurt Motor Show before hitting the market in early 2016.
