We’re usually on point when it comes to identifying camouflaged prototypes, but this one has us stumped. It’s obviously an SUV or crossover, and its relatively large size hints at a three-row setup, but it’s tough to say which automaker this belongs to.

Research

The photos were snapped by Alvaro Cortina, cousin of our colleague Miguel Cortina, Associate Online Editor at Motor Trend en Español. The prototype was located near the Miami International Airport and was prepped to be loaded in a truck. It’s possible that it had completed hot-weather and high-humidity testing in and around Miami.

The photos were circulated among editors throughout the office, which resulted in a few educated guesses, but nothing solid. Most agreed that it could be a Land Rover, based on its rectangular headlights and grille. But which Land Rover?

Others suggested that the wheels appear to come from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles parts bins. One possibility is the upcoming Jeep Grand Wagoneer, which is a strong possibility considering that FCA promised to show off the new three-row crossover to dealers this month. That unveiled, however, was originally slated to take place in Las Vegas. And based on FCA’s five-year plan, the Grand Wagoneer is scheduled to go on sale in 2017.

Another editor guessed next-generation Mazda CX-9, but that prototype was recently caught in the desert wearing current-gen CX-9 wheels. Additionally, that’s prototype’s front fascia resembled Mazda’s current design language. CX-9 prototype© Provided by MotorTrend CX-9 prototype
