There's no hiding for the next-generation Audi A5, which we spotted for the first time recently in Germany. Our spy photographers captured the coupe doing everything from roaming through secluded back roads to hitting the track.

Research

Codenamed "B9," the new A5 appears a bit more athletic than its predecessor. The model features a flatter nose and larger headlights up front, while maintaining its bold character lines that run across the side doors. In the rear, the taillights look much narrower, giving the car a slightly menacing look. A steep roofline and tapered trunk lid only add to this effect. Spied: New Audi A5 Debuts Sharper Grille, New Lights

The A5 originally debuted for the 2008 model year as the sleeker sister to the A4 sedan. Expect some big changes under the sheetmetal for the next version, however. The new coupe will ride on the new MLB Evo platform, which will underpin most of Audi's future lineup including the Audi A4 to Feature New 188-HP 2.0-Liter Engine" target="_blank">upcoming A4. By incorporating high strength steel, aluminum, and composite parts, Audi hopes the new A5 will weigh in 200 to 250 pounds less than the 2013 Audi A5, S5 First Drive" target="_blank">current model. Expect a wide range of gasoline and diesel engines available across the globe.

Audi is expected to bring a high-performance S5 and a range-topping 2013 Audi RS 5 First Drive" target="_blank">RS5 to the lineup. An A5 Sportback will likely make its way to the European market. We expect the A5 to start production in August 2016, which puts it on schedule for introduction during the 2017 model year.
