News about the Porsche Cayman GT4 first broke last year when we reported that the new variant could come within the next three years. But based on these recent spy photos, the Cayman GT4 looks ready for action today.

Research

Caught roaming the highway was the Cayman GT4 prototype shown here. It’s free of camouflage and badges, but it’s obvious that this isn’t a standard Cayman. For starters there’s the massive fixed rear spoiler that’s far from elegant but looks functional and more production-correct compared to the last tester we saw. Up front, the bumper is dominated by air scoops and a splitter, while the air duct ahead of the hood is another hint that this is a special Cayman. Powertrain details are still unknown. Rumors have suggested that the Cayman GT4 will still sport a flat-six, but could be augmented by a hybrid system. A turbocharged inline-four engine is also possibility, and we've heard that the Cayman GT4 will like be offered with either a manual or a dual-clutch automatic transmission, as opposed to the Porsche 911 GT3 which isn't available with a manual.

For those seeking the combination of GT4 goodies and top-down driving, a Boxster version is also in the works. A Boxster GT4 tester was spotted a few weeks ago, months after the first Cayman GT4 prototype was caught meandering around the Nürburgring. That said, this mid-engine Porsche is shaping up to be one fun track toy. Porsche Cayman GT4 prototype© Provided by MotorTrend Porsche Cayman GT4 prototype
