Spied: Possible Next-Gen Volkswagen Tiguan Prototype

A prototype of what appears to be the next-generation Volkswagen Tiguan crossover has been spotted hiding in shortened Touran minivan sheet metal. While the latest Touran prototypes are longer than the model currently on sale in Europe, the prototype shown here is shorter than the outgoing and upcoming minivan. Larger wheel and tire package and higher ground clearance also suggest that these spy shots are of the Tiguan crossover.

In addition to sharing the Volkswagen Golf ’s MQB platform, the next-generation Tiguan is also expected to use the Golf’s powertrains including the new 170-hp 1.8-liter turbocharged I-4, 148-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4, and the GTI’s 210-220-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4. A report from Automobile magazine suggests a Tiguan R with the Golf R’s 290-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 is also possible. With snow chains on just the front wheels, we suspect this prototype is a front-drive model. An all-wheel-drive model should still be available and is expected to use the Haldex 5 system. Although the next-generation Tiguan’s wheelbase will grow slightly to increase rear passenger legroom, it will remain a five-seat crossover, leaving room in the lineup for the production version of the seven-passenger Volkswagen CrossBlue concept.
