Spied: This Volkswagen Golf R Mule’s R400 Parts are Showing

The Volkswagen Golf R400 concept has been rumored to be slated for production, and these spy shots of a suspicious-looking hot hatch wearing regular Golf R badges seem to back up that possibility.

While the “R” badges on the prototype make it look like an unsuspecting Golf R, certain elements suggest the hatchback has a much racier nature. The big rear wing is suggestive that this Golf puts out more than the R’s 292 hp, especially since the wing closely resembles the one on the GTI Clubsport concept that debuted earlier this month at Worthersee. Other elements that hint at a more powerful Golf R400 include cross-drilled brake rotors and enlarged brake calipers that should more effectively bring the R400's rumored 400-plus horses to a stop. Sporty wheels, low profile tires, a unique front lip spoiler, and an oil cooler behind the front grille serve as more hints that this is not your average Golf R. The Golf R 400 concept first appeared in sketch form at the 2014 Auto China show in Beijing, where the automaker boasted the hatch made 400 (metric) horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four. The concept was reportedly fitted with a DSG and 4Motion all-wheel drive, with the ability to go from 0-60 mph in an estimated 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 174 mph. A Volkswagen bigwig previously told us that the R400 will likely get the production nod and come to America. If an R400 is on the way as these spy photos seem to suggest, it should definitely give the Subaru WRX STI, Mercedes CLA45 AMG, and upcoming Ford Focus RS something to worry about.
