SUVs and Crossovers of the 2014 New York Auto Show

The U.S. loves its sport utility vehicles and its crossovers, and automakers are so excited by the profitable market that at the 2014 New York auto show, they not only had new models, redesigns and concepts out in force, one even previewed a subcompact with photographs only. They range from the new 2015 Honda HR-V subcompact to the futuristic Land Rover Discovery Vision concept.

2015 Nissan Murano

The SUV looks more futuristic thanks to certain styling cues such as the floating roof and boomerang-shaped taillights, and although the 2015 Nissan Murano rides on the same wheelbase, there's a bit more of it to love since it's longer by 2.5 inches and wider by 1.3 inches.

2015 BMW X4

2015 BMW X4© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 BMW X4 Although it's in a much smaller package than the BMW X6, the X4 promises everything it has and then some. The X4 is powered by either a 240-hp I-4 or a 300-hp I-6, matched to an eight-speed automatic. You can call it a crossover, but BMW says the X6 drives like a sports coupe due to its low center of gravity. Want to spice things up? Get the available M package.

Land Rover Discovery Vision Concept

Cameras at the base of the windshield projected a view of what drivers can't see underneath the front of the car, making it seem like the hood itself is invisible. Something like this could change off-roading forever.

2015 Subaru Outback

2015 Subaru Outback© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Subaru Outback The Outback was already a best-seller, so the 2015 Outback should continue that success since it now looks sleeker and more modern. Most importantly, all Outbacks get improved fuel economy thanks to a standard CVT. Four-cylinder models get 3 mpg more on the highway, while the H-6 models get 2 mpg more in the city and on the highway, meaning you can get farther away from civilization on a single tank.

2015 Infiniti QX80

The QX80 Limited is a special edition QX80 that's been equipped to the nines, with an extravagant interior made up of leather-quilted seats, a suede headliner, and beautiful open-pore-like wood. The garden-variety QX80 (pictured) isn't bad either, which has been updated with a new front grille.

Chevrolet Trax

© Provided by MotorTrend The Trax is like the Buick Encore, but without the fancy suit on. The Chevrolet Trax was first shown in Paris in 2012, and although Chevrolet didn't have plans to bring it to the U.S., the unexpected success of the Encore may have caused it to rethink its plans. The Trax will be an enticing option when it joins the lineup as a 2015 model.

Jeep Renegade

The Jeep Renegade may have already been revealed in Geneva, but is making its first U.S. appearance in New York. The Renegade is said to be a not only be a proper off-roader, but also fuel efficient. Jeep expects the Renegade to get at least 30 mpg on the highway, which applies to both the turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir I-4 and the 2.4-liter Tigershark I-4. No invisible hood, but still good enough.

2015 BMW X3

For those who weren't interested in the X4, the X3 also debuted in New York with a fresh face and updated interior that includes the automaker's latest version of iDrive. The front grille also looks more in line with the new BMW 3 Series.

BMW X5 eDrive Concept

2015 BMW X5 eDrive© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 BMW X5 eDrive It may look like your regular X5, but it's not. This electrified X5 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4 plus an electric motor that produces an extra 95 hp for a combined output of 340 hp. Although the eDrive tech is pulled from the i3 and i8, this is the first time it's been paired with xDrive permanent all-wheel drive.

Honda HR-V

They didn't have one physically at the show, but Honda's photos were creating a big buzz for the small crossover. Following in the footsteps of the best-selling CR-V, we anticipate the HR-V will offer just as much as its larger sibling but in a much smaller package. Watch out, Chevrolet Trax and Nissan Juke.

2015 Mini Countryman

2015 Mini Countryman© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Mini Countryman The automaker's second-best selling vehicle looked rather mean at the New York show thanks to a minor facelift. New updates to the Countryman's front grille made it look more aggressive, and we loved that new Jungle Green Metallic paint color paired with the contrasting black roof, side mirrors, and hood stripes. Looks like another top-seller to us.

Kia Sedona

MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image It's not an SUV or crossover, the but the Kia Sedona is close enough since the minivan was completely made over for its comeback to the U.S. market. After taking some time off, the Sedona debuted with the same good looks as the rest of the lineup and cool new family friendly features such as Speed Alert and Curfew Alert. It should provide good competition for the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.
