In the world of sales, referrals are a prized commodity because they are usually already sold on the product and are ready to buy. Tesla Motors recognizes this and is launching an extensive sales referral program where both the referrer and the buyer earn $1,000 from a sale.

CEO Elon Musk yesterday discussed the program during a conference call with the media. For now, the referral offer will be a short-term experiment that will run through the end of October, though there’s a chance it could become a permanent program depending on its success.

Redeeming the offer is simple. The current owner of a Tesla sends a link to the buyer, who then receives a $1,000 discount on the purchase of their new vehicle. Meanwhile, the referrer gets a $1,000 credit toward Tesla gear, service work, or the purchase of a future vehicle. There are also incentives for top-sellers, including a tour of the new Gigafactory and first dibs on a limited-edition Model X “Founder Series” that includes an additional $25,000 discount.

Musk pointed out another important benefit for the referral program, specificaly with states that have banned Tesla’s direct sales method.

“Tesla representatives are not allowed to sell in certain states,” Musk said during the conference call. “Customers, who are not salespeople, can refer their friends -- there’s no rule against that. And so, this is a guerrilla tactic against car dealers in certain states. I don’t want to characterize that as the main reason, but it could be something that helps us.”
