Top 10 Coolest Cars to Get Name-Dropped In Song

Motor Trend logo Motor Trend 9/4/2015 Christian Seabaugh

Top 10 Best Driving Songs lists have been done to death. I mean, how many different ways can one (wrongly) assert that "Radar Love" by Golden Earring is the best driving song of all time? Anyway, I much prefer the White Lion cover. Looking to shake things up a bit, let's run through a list of 10 of the coolest cars that are specifically name-checked in a song. It's not a comprehensive list—rather, it's a list of the 10 coolest cars in the 10 best songs that I could think of. Check out what I came up with, and see if you can do any better.

Research

Commander Cody, "Hot Rod Lincoln"

1903 Ford Model A© Provided by MotorTrend 1903 Ford Model A Car: Ford Model A with Lincoln V-8

Sample Lyric:It's got a Lincoln motor, and it's really souped up/And that Model A body makes it look like a pup/It's got eight cylinders, uses them all/It's got overdrive, just won't stall

No, Commander Cody didn't write the original "Hot Rod Lincoln" (Wikipedia tells me Charlie Ryan did), but this is the version I grew up hearing my dad play on the stereo during family road trips. This classic gets the nod because it's pretty hard to get any cooler than a powerful Lincoln V-8 swapped into anything, let alone a tiny flyweight Ford Model A (pictured). I just remembered Lincoln doesn't make V-8s anymore. Sigh.

Beach Boys, "Little Deuce Coupe"

1932 Ford Hot Rod© Provided by MotorTrend 1932 Ford Hot Rod Car: 1932 Ford hot rod

Sample Lyric:Just a little deuce coupe with a flat head mill/But she'll walk a Thunderbird like (she's) it's standin' still/She's ported and relieved, and she's stroked and bored/She'll do a hundred and forty with the top end floored

Yeah, yeah, another overplayed one. This one gets the nod because it's the Beach Boys' best song about cars and because the 1932 Ford hot rod this song is about appeared on the cover of sister mag HOT ROD in March 1961.

Jerry Reed, "Eastbound and Down"

Burt Reynolds Smokey and the Bandit Pontiac Trans Am© Provided by MotorTrend Burt Reynolds Smokey and the Bandit Pontiac Trans Am Car: 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am

Sample Lyric:Keep your foot hard on the pedal. Son, never mind them brakes./Let it all hang out 'cause we got a run to make./The boys are thirsty in Atlanta, and there's beer in Texarkana./And we'll bring it back no matter what it takes.

Yeah, I'm cheating a little on this one—Jerry Reed never specifically mentions Burt Reynolds' 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am in this "Smokey And The Bandit" theme song, but we all know which car he's singing about, don't we?

Vanilla Ice, "Rollin In My 5.0"

1990 Ford Mustang GT Convertible© Provided by MotorTrend 1990 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Car: 1990 Ford Mustang GT Convertible

Sample Lyric:It's not a Benz or a Jag, it's a 5-0 with a rag/And I don't wanna brag, but I could never be stag/When I'm cruisin', to A-1-A/Zero to 60, 4 seconds don't play

Say what you will about Vanilla Ice's music, but he certainly had good taste in cars. I picked "Rollin in My 5.0" to represent all Ford Mustangs after I listened to Wilson Pickett's version of "Mustang Sally" for 10 seconds and realized I couldn't stand it.

Primus, "Jerry Was a Racecar Driver"

Oldsmobile 422© Provided by MotorTrend Oldsmobile 422 Car: Oldsmobile 4-4-2

Sample Lyric:Jerry was a race car driver/He'd say el solo number one/With a Bocephus sticker/On his 4-4-2 he'd light 'em up just for fun

I usually associate this song with the "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater" video game, but this awesome Primus song is one of the few modern(ish) rock songs that actually name-drops a specific car, the legendary Oldsmobile 4-4-2.

Eazy-E, "Boyz-N-The-Hood"

1964 Chevrolet Impala© Provided by MotorTrend 1964 Chevrolet Impala Car: 1964 Chevy Impala

Sample Lyric:Cruisin' down the street in my '64/Jockin the freaks, clockin' the dough/Went to the park to get the scoop/Knuckleheads out there cold shooting some hoops

An old-school hip-hop classic. Eazy-E raps about staying hard in the hood in his old-school 1964 Chevrolet Impala.

Notorious B.I.G., "Hypnotize"

1997 Lexus LX 450© Provided by MotorTrend 1997 Lexus LX 450 Cars: 1997 Lexus LX 450

Sample Lyrics:Loose like Starsky and Hutch, stick the clutch/Dare I squeeze three at your cherry M3/… Frank White push the sticks/on the Lexus, LX, four and a half/Bulletproof glass tints if I want some ass/Gonna blast squeeze first ask questions last

Notorious B.I.G., "Hypnotize"

1994 BMW M3 E36 convertible© Provided by MotorTrend 1994 BMW M3 E36 convertible Cars: 1997 BMW M3

I'm killing two birds with one stone here: Biggie Smalls references two awesome cars in his 1997 hit "Hypnotize": the Toyota Land Cruiser-based Lexus LX 450 and the E36-era BMW M3, in Cherry Red, naturally (an E36 M3 convertible is pictured).

Ace Hood, Future, Rick Ross, "Bugatti"

2013 bugatti veyron grand sport vitesse© Provided by MotorTrend 2013 bugatti veyron grand sport vitesse Car: Bugatti Veyron

Sample Lyric:I woke up in the new Bugatti/I woke up in the new Bugatti/I woke up in the new Bugatti/I woke up in the new Bugatti/I woke up in the new Bugatti

So I don't actually like this song (that much, I suppose), but the premise—waking up in a brand-new Bugatti Veyron with no idea how you got it—is fantastically hilarious. Make sure you watch the video. It's awesome.

Childish Gambino, "IV. Sweatpants"

2012 Fisker Karma front three quarter© Provided by MotorTrend 2012 Fisker Karma front three quarter Car: Fisker Karma

Sample Lyric:Ain't nobody sicker than my Fisker "vroom, vroom," ho/Ain't nobody/—Fiskers don't make noise when they start up, just so you know

Childish Gambino gets bonus points for correctly pointing out that Fisker Karmas don't actually make noise when they start up—though if he had his hands on an LS-swapped one courtesy of Bob Lutz, that obviously might change.
