In many ways, race cars are the ultimate cars. Built without compromise, race cars are designed for one purpose and one purpose only: to go fast. In the past couple months we've been lucky enough to drive a handful of race cars, like the wonderful 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 Trans-Am race car that's gracing our homepage this morning, and the BMW Z4 GT3 and M3 DTM race cars. Though decades of development separate the Camaro and M3 race cars, they're alike in more ways than one.

Research

Our recent race car test drives got us thinking about our favorite race cars. My personal favorite race cars are all over the map – they range from Carroll Shelby's legendary Daytona Coupe, to Richard Petty's Plymouth Superbird NASCAR racer, to Ken Block's Ford Fiesta Gymkhana car. If I had to pick just one though, I think it'd be the Ford RS200 Group B rally car from the '80s. I can't really explain why, but I love just how ridiculous and absurd the Group B RS200 is.

With that in mind, what's your favorite race car of all-time? Sound off on today's Thread of the Day in the comments below.
