It’s clear that Mercedes-Benz and Cadillac benchmarked the BMW 3 Series with the newly refreshed C-Class and ATS , but just when we thought the luxury sports sedans were on a more level playing field, BMW has gone and refreshed the 3 Series, complete with new powertrains, an updated suspension, and a subtle new look. Will the 2016 3 Series remain the one to beat?

The BMW 3 Series sedan now comes equipped with a more-powerful inline-six engine producing 320 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. This engine is available on the new range-topping 340i model, which has 20 more horses than the outgoing 335i. Transmission options include an eight-speed automatic transmission and a six-speed manual. With the automatic, BMW says the 340i sedan sprints to 60 mph in as little as 4.6 seconds, but we suspect those numbers are a bit modest since the 2013 BMW 335i xDrive clocked that sprint in 4.4 seconds. BMW also says the new 3 Series should also roll less and steer more precisely. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

The Mercedes C-Class was also just recently updated, with the new C450 AMG 4Matic packing a potent 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 good for 362 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. The standard 4Matic all-wheel-drive system is tuned by AMG for sportier handling. Mercedes says this car can go from 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds, though we still have yet to test it. As for the Cadillac ATS 3.6, we previously said its chassis dynamics were more of a match to the BMW, even if it still can’t outrun it with its 321-hp.

Even though its rivals keep getting better, will the 2016 BMW 3 Series remain the one to beat? Let us know in the comments below for today’s TOTD, and don’t forget to read more about the 2016 BMW 3 Series in our First Look here.
