Can you compare a car with a twin-turbocharged I-6 to one with a naturally aspirated V-8? You can when they're rivals like the Lexus RC F and BMW M4.

Research

Both the Lexus RC F and BMW M4 have recently made the sports car world just a little more interesting. The first one takes an old-school approach to engineering, featuring a naturally aspirated V-8. BMW takes a slightly more modern approach with the M4's twin-turbo 3.0-liter I-6, and -- thanks to generous use of aluminum -- the car weighs in at 3604 pounds, compared to the Lexus' plump 4040 pounds (The roof of both cars is carbon fiber -- it's an option on the Lexus). Both are rear-wheel-drive.

The Lexus' V-8 pumps out 467 hp and 389 lb-ft of torque while the BMW M4 manages 425 hp and 406 lb-ft. But how do these engines play out on the track? In our testing, the Lexus reached 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, while it only took the M4 4.0 seconds. The BMW also won out in the quarter-mile, finishing the task in 12.2 seconds at 117.8 mph compared to the Lexus' 12.9 seconds and a trap speed of 110.3 mph.

If we must look at practicality, the RC F is priced starting at $63,225, less than the BMW M4's $65,150 base price. Fuel economy is basically a tie, and probably not a major consideration in this class anyway.

With top-end sports coupes like these, we think the decision is always going to be somewhat emotional and subjective. So which car would you choose? Sound off below.
