Toyota has issued a voluntary recall on certain 2010-2014 Toyota Prius for an issue with the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control software, as well as certain 2012 Toyota RAV4, 2012- 2013 Toyota Tacoma, and 2012- 2013 Lexus RX350 models for a software issue related to Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-lock Brake, and Traction Control functions.

The Problem: With the current software settings for the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control ECU, certain transistors could experience thermal stress potentially leading to damage. In such situations, various warning lights will illuminate and the vehicle could enter a failsafe mode, which could cause the vehicle to lose power and come to a stop.

The Fix: Toyota will update the motor/generator control ECU and hybrid control ECU software on affected vehicles. The software update will take approximately 40 minutes. If a control module needs to be replaced, the fix could take up to three hours. Owners will be notified by mail when the software updates are available.

The Problem: An electronic circuit condition could cause the Vehicle Stability Control, Anti-lock Brake, and Traction Control functions to turn off intermittently. The automaker reports that the standard braking operation is unaffected when these systems are off.

The Fix: Toyota will update the skid control ECU software on affected vehicles.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The recall affects a combined total of approximately 260,000 2012 Toyota RAV4, 2012-2013 Toyota Tacoma, and 2012- 2013 Lexus RX350 models. Owners can contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or Lexus 1-800-255-3987.
