Tweaked 2015 Ram Heavy Duty Claims Best-in-Class Towing

Ram is going big and playing fair. Thanks to a recalibrated and more powerful engine, the 2015 Ram 3500 can now claim best-in-class torque output and towing and payload capacity. Additionally, Ram says it achieved those tow ratings by adhering to SAE J2807 test criteria, making it the only automaker to use the standard in both its light and heavy duty trucks.

To achieve these claims, Ram tweaked the Cummins 6.7-liter turbodiesel I-6 with “aggressive” fuel delivery and turbo boost calibration. Horsepower stays put at 385 hp, but torque is now rated at 865 lb-ft (at 1700 rpm), which is 15 lb-ft more than before. The engine will produce this power only when it’s mated to the Aisin six-speed automatic transmission, otherwise power drops a bit with the 68RFE six-speed auto or the six-speed manual. That torque rating puts the Ram ahead of the Ford F-Series and its 6.7-liter turbodiesel V-8, which makes 860 lb-ft, but more horsepower at 440 hp. Meanwhile, the 2015 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD powered by the Duramax 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 makes 397 hp and 765 lb-ft. 2015 Ram Heavy Duty© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Ram Heavy Duty

That said, the 2015 Ram 3500 will now tow up to 30,000 pounds, which is around 1.5 tons more than its closest competitor, the 2015 Ford F-350 (26,700 pounds). The Silverado 3500 HD is limited to 23,200 pounds. Ram points out that its tow rating is based on the SAE J2807 testing standards, compared to its competitors that test and rate their heavy duty trucks independently. The automaker is also claiming that the Ram 3500 has best-in-class payload (7390 pounds).

Ram Heavy Duty trucks will still be offered with two gas-powered V-8s, including a 5.7-liter rated at 383 hp and 400 lb-ft and a 6.4-liter that makes 410 hp and 429 lb-ft. The model-year 2015 Ram Heavy Duty trucks go into production this week and should reach showrooms shortly after. 2015 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty
