The U.S.-spec 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata made its official debut at the 2014 Los Angeles auto show this week. Now in its fourth generation, the two-seat roadster adopts the automaker’s Kodo design language as well as its suite of Skyactiv technologies.

Research

While most global markets will be available with Skyactiv-G 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines, the U.S.-spec models will only be sold with the larger 2.0-liter engine. While Mazda hasn’t revealed any engine specs, the automaker did say the new 2.0-liter Skyactiv will be a naturally aspirated engine with “ultra-high compression.” As we've previously reported, the engine will be backed by a Skyactiv-MT six-speed manual transmission. The outgoing model is powered by a 2.0-liter I-4 rated 167 hp and 140 lb-ft of torque.

While the second- and third-generation models grew in size and weight, the fourth-generation model is closer to the original Miata. The 2016 Miata is 154.1 inches long and rides on a 91.1-inch wheelbase. Overall width measures 68.1 inches. Mazda also claims the new Miata is around 220 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, though we've heard as much as 300 pounds of weight reduction is possible.

The revised front double-wishbone suspension and rear multilink suspension combined with the lighter and stiffer chassis are said to improve handling over the outgoing car. That upgraded hardware is wrapped in new Kodo-inspired bodywork. The third-generation car’s smiley face gives way to a more aggressive mug, while the hood and fenders as well as the sides and rear feature more curves and creases. Exterior illumination is provided by LED headlights, fog lights, and taillights.

Inside, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata features a new interior with the intuitive Mazda Connect infotainment system lifted from the 2014 Mazda3 sedan and hatchback. The top part of the door panels features the exterior body color to blur the lines between the roadster’s interior and exterior.
