If you find the 138-hp Chevrolet Sonic RS a poor competitor for the 197-hp Ford Fiesta ST, GM has an answer for you -- if you live in the U.K. The 202-hp Vauxhall Corsa VXR shown at the 2015 Geneva auto show will hit showrooms in May.

Research

Like the Ford Fiesta ST, the Vauxhall Corsa VXR is powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter I-4 mated to a six-speed manual. However, the Corsa VXR makes 202 hp and 206 lb-ft of torque to the Fiesta ST’s 197 hp and 202 lb-ft. With 180 lb-ft available from 1900-5900 rpm, the Corsa VXR can reach 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and has a top speed of 143 mph, according to GM. In our testing, the Ford Fiesta ST reached 60 mph in 6.4 seconds.

Updates to the engine over the previous Corsa VXR include a revised air intake, new fuel injectors a new engine management system, and a turbocharger integrated into the exhaust system co-developed by Remus. A short-throw transmission shifter with a revised lever, shift cable, and bearing cap with adjusted end stops is said to reduce shift travel by 13 percent.

Other suspension changes include new rear axle geometry, a new torsion profile rod, spring rates, anti-roll bars, and updated rear axle bearing bushings. The Corsa VXR sits 10 mm lower than the standard model. Additionally, there is a new two-stage electronic stability program (ESP) and traction control (TC) system. Competitor Mode turns off TC and relaxes the ESP, while ESP can be fully disabled for track use.

An available Performance Package adds a Drexler limited-slip differential, larger 13.0-inch Brembo front rotors (12.1-inch rotors are standard), revised FSD settings, and 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot SuperSport tires that replace the standard 17-inch alloys.

Visual updates include standard HID headlights and LED daytime running lights, an aggressive front bumper with larger air intakes framed in aluminum, and a small scoop below the hood. Aggressive side-sill extensions, a functional rear roof spoiler, and twin Remus exhaust tips sticking out from the rear diffuser complete the look. An available Carbon Pack includes mirror covers and front grille logo bar, while the available Technical Pack includes forward collision alert, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning, following distance indicator, an electro-chromatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror, back-up camera, and front and rear parking sensors. A panoramic glass sunroof is also available.

Inside, the Vauxhall VXR features cloth Recaro sport seats with Morrocana trim, a flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel, and a unique VXR gauge cluster, sport pedals and door sill covers.

Unfortunately, we don’t expect to see the Vauxhall Corsa VXR or a similar car from GM to take on the Ford Fiesta ST in the U.S., but you can get you fill of GM's latest hot hatch in the gallery below.
