Volkswagen Group is preparing for a future of efficiency, and that future includes electrically-supercharged three-cylinder engines as well as new W-12 powerplants.

Research

In Vienna this month, Volkswagen showed off its new 1.0-liter three-cylinder TSI, which features genes from the Polo WRC rally car. This engine produces a whopping 268 hp and 199 lb-ft of torque thanks to a monoscroll turbocharger and e-booster.

On the other end of the spectrum is VW Group's future 6.0-liter W-12 TSI engine. The automaker calls it the "most economical twelve-cylinder engine in the luxury car segment" thanks to its low C02 emissions of less than 250 g/km in the New European Driving Cycle. This engine, which we expect to debut on Bentley models as well as the Audi A8, should pack 599 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque. VW says top speed will be above 186 mph, while 0-62 mph can be achieved in under 4 seconds. Compare this to the Audi A8 First Look" target="_blank">current A8 L W-12, which boasts 500 hp and 463 lb-ft of torque, as well as an Audi-estimated 0-60 mph time of 4.4 seconds.

Other innovations coming down the pipeline include a "laser roughening" coating technique that reduces friction on the engine to boost performance, as well as new 2.0-liter diesel engines for light-duty vehicles. Efficient TSI and TSFI engines, "ideally in combination with DSG," will be an important part of VW's future, the automaker says. But VW also notes the breadth of its electric and plug-in offerings, and says there is potential for Toyota Mirai First Drive" target="_blank">fuel cell cars to enter the picture sometime in the future.
