Volkswagen GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo Concept Unveiled

Volkswagen continues its tease of the car bound for digital competition in Sony's Gran Turismo 6, and now we have sketches and a name for the concept: the GTI Roadster Vision Gran Turismo. Like the Mercedes-Benz and BMW Vision GT concepts, the GTI Roadster will be downloadable in the game. But VW will also show off a real-life chopped-top GTI at the annual Wörthersee festival next week.

From the sketches VW has provided, the GTI Roadster looks nothing like a standard Mark-7 Golf, sitting extremely low and wide. Nevertheless, Volkswagen says the concept "uses the Golf GTI Design DNA to create a strong sporting statement," similar to the Design Vision GTI that debuted in Wörthersee last year. The would-be hot hatch features a chopped roof and wrap-around glass (which must be a theme this year, as VW Group's two other concepts bound for the festival also sport the look).

Volkswagen says the concept is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder VR6 TSI engine, producing 503 hp and 491 lb-ft of torque (the unit in last year's Vision GTI made the same 503 hp but just 413 lb-ft). That engine is backed by a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission that's programmed for faster shifts. An integrated rear diffuser, large rear wing, and race car-like front splitter should help keep the GTI Roadster stable on virtual race tracks once the car is rendered in-game. The chopped-roof GTI rides on 20-inch wheels wrapped in 235/35 front and 275/30 rear tires, which hide 15-inch brake rotors in front and 14-inch discs in the rear.

The one-off, topless GTI will appear in a vivid metallic red finish when it debuts at Wörthersee next week.
