Development of a seventh-gen Volkswagen Golf race car is under way. Volkswagen Motorsport is building the car to meet Touringcar Racer International Series (TCR) requirements. The car will be used to evaluate a customer race program beginning with the 2016 race season.

“The newly created TCR category provides a promising platform for customer racing -- on a national and international level. With exciting races, production-based technology and reasonable costs, it offers a new outlook for private racing teams,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Jost Capito, in a release.

Based on the production car, the Volkswagen Golf Mk. VII race car will be powered by the Golf R ’s 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 making 330 hp and 340 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission that sends power to the front wheels. The engine was developed with help from VW Group brand Seat and the knowledge gained from development of the Leon Cup Racer.

Aerodynamic modifications include a new front splitter, a 15.75-inch wider body, and a large carbon fiber rear wing. Safety equipment includes a racing seat with head protection, roll cage, and FIA approved fuel cell. The race car rides on 18-inch racing wheels. Volkswagen Motorsport will work with the Liqui Moly Team Engstler to test the race car under competitive conditions by running two cars at the eighth round of the Touringcar Racer International Series (TCR) at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg (A).

The TCR series currently doesn't hold any races in the U.S., so don't expect to see this wide-body Golf on our shores anytime soon.
