Volvo is pushing into higher levels of luxury with its new Volvo XC90 Excellence, an ultra-luxurious version of its new SUV that appears to target the Chinese market, where rear-seat accommodations are of utmost importance.

Instead of the second and third rows of seating providing seven seats, the Volvo XC90 Excellence has two individual reclining rear thrones, reducing seating capacity to four but offering all sorts of creature comforts for those being chauffeured around in back. Each plush rear seat has its own folding table, ambient lighting, and footrest, along with ventilation and massage functions. Also added in the rear is a refrigerator with bottle and glass holders, a retractable touchscreen display, and even crystal glasses from Orrefors, the Swedish company that also provides the crystal for the XC90’s shift knob.

The Volvo XC90 Excellence lives up to its flagship status with extra luxury features like an augmented Bowers & Wilkins audio system, additional sound insulation, and special leather detailing with contrasting stitching and a color-coordinated textile headliner. On the outside, you can tell the Excellence apart from lesser XC90 models with its chrome trim on the B- and C-pillars and lower door moldings.

We don’t know many more details about where this new range-topping model will be sold, as Volvo only confirms that it will reach “select markets” later this year. Wherever it ends up being sold, it will compete with other high-buck SUVs like the long-wheelbase Range Rover and the " title="">Cadillac Escalade ESV.

We’re not holding our breath for it to come to the U.S., but stay tuned for more news about the Volvo XC90 Excellence as we find out more about this high-buck SUV including pricing and availability details.
