A production version of the Audi TT Offroad concept shown at the 2014 Beijing auto show in April could become a thing, a new report from Automotive News suggests. The rumors are fueled by comments made by an Audi spokesman during the press launch for the third-generation 2016 Audi TT.

Ulrich Hackenberg, Audi development chief, said the TT Offroad concept “provides an insight into how we might envisage a new model in a future TT family.” A production version of the Audi TT Offroad could meet the consumer demands for a small, practical sporty model with four doors and a higher riding position similar to that of the Mini Countryman.

In Europe, market demand for the new third-generation 2016 Audi TT is expected to be lower than that of the last model due to changing consumer demands. “Many image- or fashion-conscious buyers are moving to the rapidly growing crossover sector as a means of expressing their taste,” Mark Fulthorpe , a market analyst with IHS Automotive, told Automotive News.

“Further segmentation of the market will continue as carmakers look to fulfill current customer demands and find ways to meet those that don’t as yet exist,” an unidentified Audi executive told the news outlet.
