Our colleagues at AUTOMOBILE have caught wind of a new segment-crossing BMW vehicle, known internally as the XCite. The vehicle is expected to hit dealers in 2018, when it's likely to be called the 1 Series Sport Cross.

The report says that the vehicle will be a small, lifestyle-oriented crossover, but that it won't be simply a lifted 1 Series or shrunken-down X1. Its exterior will be designed from scratch and the interior will be completely unique. The model will initially be offered as a five-door hatch, though a three-door may follow later down the line. The engine lineup will consist of three- and four-cylinder engines paired with either six-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

The model may feature a few tweaked traditional BMW styling cues, but insiders say early design submissions are "progressive and polarizing." AUTOMOBILE says to expect a compact greenhouse, sculpted body, long nose and roof, and wide wheelbase, with some M Sport and X-line styling elements thrown in.

Set to hit showrooms in Europe, North America, Asia, and the Middle East by 2018, the crossover is expected to receive a base price in the $30,000 range with a projected production run of 250,000 units over its life span. The automaker doesn't expect a big profit margin from this new model, but with its unique looks, it may draw in a different buyer who is looking less for the badge and history of a car, and more for the personality and style it offers.
