We Hear: Jaguar XK to Return as Comfier Grand Tourer

Production on the Jaguar XK may have just ended this past summer, but already there's talk of a new, larger and more comfortable grand tourer model that will take its place in the lineup.

Research

This comes from Russ Varney, former project leader for the XK, who told Autocar, "There is no reason the XK couldn't exist today as a true contender in the GT segment." After the arrival of the stunning F-Type, the XK didn't seem to make much sense, as the two were close in terms of pricing and performance. To prevent that from happening again, the automaker plans on making its replacement more of a GT-focused car. That car, due sometime in 2017, will reportedly be based on a stretched and widened version of the F-Type's aluminum platform, making it larger and more comfortable than the XK. 2012 Jaguar XKR-S© Provided by MotorTrend 2012 Jaguar XKR-S

Varney admitted the XK straddled the GT and sports car segments, with not enough emphasis on the GT side. Developing a more grand touring-focused car will separate it even more from the F-Type, which now serves as the automaker's halo sports car.

“We have plans to do lots more with the F-type, and we expect it to cover a lot of bases, but there will still be other areas we want to cover. We need to find the right way to deliver on them, and the XK could be one way of doing that,” Varney told Autocar. 2015 Jaguar F Type R Coupe© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Jaguar F Type R Coupe

This could mean the replacement will top the F-Type in terms of cost, though it would still be positioned below the likes of the Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB9.
