We Hear: New Mini Minor City Car in the Works

Remember the Mini Rocketman ? Well, it looks like Mini is revisiting the idea of a small, entry-level car. According to our colleagues at AUTOMOBILE, a new model called the Mini Minor is on its way to market, channeling the Rocketman concept from 2011.

“It´s still early days as far as the baby Mini goes,” a source from Mini told AUTOMOBILE. “But when our new R&D board member Klaus Fröhlich traveled to America early in the new year, this was one of the subjects on his agenda.”

Drawing styling inspiration from the Rocketman and Paceman, the Mini Minor features funky details like a double-bubble rear roof section, small trapezoidal grille, and upright Union jack taillights. And it should be lightweight and relatively lean on content, considering the car will likely be priced between $14,500 and $16,000. Keeping costs down won't be easy, however, considering that electrification may be part of the equation.

Believe it or not, the Minor is part of BMW's long partnership with Toyota. Not only did the two companies agree to build sports cars together, but they are also collaborating on this entry-level hatch. Rest assured though, as the Minor will not be a re-worked Toyota Aygo or other mainstream hatch that may detract from Mini's premium image.

The Mini Minor is reportedly just one of five new Mini cars planned for the near future. Watch for a new Clubman this summer, a new Countryman in 2016, and even a new Superleggera roadster for early 2018. To read more about Mini's plans, head over to AUTOMOBILE.
