The current-generation 2015 Chevrolet Cruze is only offered in sedan form in the U.S., but Europeans get a hatchback version. Back in 2013, General Motors product chief Mark Reuss called the decision “a pre-bankruptcy planning mistake.” Now, it appears GM will attempt to fix that perceived mistake by offering U.S. customers a hatchback variant of the next-generation Cruze.

According to Automotive News, GM last week showed off a hatchback Cruze to dealers attending the company’s national meeting in Las Vegas. GM is scheduled to show off the new Cruze sedan to media later this week, though it’s unclear if the Cruze hatchback will be revealed as well.

Many of the Cruze’s competitors are offered in hatchback form. The Ford Focus hatch, for example, accounts for around 40 percent of the compact’s total sales, while the Volkswagen Golf is also relatively popular. Honda will also re-enter the compact hatchback fray with the next-generation Civic.

Earlier this year revealing spy photos exposed the Cruze sedan's sheetmetal. Its front clip resembles the midsize Malibu and its side profile showcases more distinguishing creases than before. The new Cruze is expected to receive new powertrains including a 1.5-liter turbo-four and a rumored plug-in hybrid. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image
