Toyota will reveal the next-generation Toyota Prius hybrid in Las Vegas next month. The redesigned 2016 Toyota Prius will be shown to media on September 8, a Toyota spokesman told Automotive News.

Research

It’s been seven years since the current third-generation Toyota Prius went on sale for the 2010 model year. That year also marked the current model’s highest sales year with 509,399 units sold -- double the previous year. The aging model is beginning to lose sales to full-electric vehicles including the Tesla Model S, Nissan Leaf, and BMW i3.

The new car is expected to depart from the current model’s dowdy image with a new three-box design as well as more power and improved fuel economy, which is said to increase from around 50 mpg combined to closer to 60 mpg combined. Additionally, the new Prius is also supposed to gain better driving dynamics. Toyota also says the redesigned rear suspension will also increase interior room.

The 2016 Toyota Prius will ride on the automaker’s new modular vehicle platform, the same bones that underpin the hydrogen-powered Mirai. With the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA), the automaker is hoping to save 20 percent in development costs by sharing platforms, parts, and powertrains among most of its lineup. The move is also expected to reduce production cost and improve overall quality as well as reduce repairs and maintenance.

Although Toyota hasn’t confirmed production or on-sale dates, a July report suggested production had been pushed back to December 2015.
