Details of Porsche’s new family of horizontally opposed four-cylinder engines have leaked. The F-4 engines will be available in three displacements including 1.6-liter, 2.0-liter, and 2.5-liter variants, CAR reports.

According to the report, the new engines will feature turbochargers and direct injection, and will produce impressive power figures for their size. Horsepower reportedly ranges from 210 hp for the 1.6-liter, to 286 hp for the 2.0-liter, with the range topped-off by a 360 hp 2.5-liter engine. The 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter will produce 295 lb-ft and 347 lb-ft of torque, respectively. The next-generation Boxster and Cayman will likely be the first models to use the new 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter flat-4 engines. While the 1.6-liter is said to be originally designed for the no longer planned baby Boxster “551” and related Audi and Volkswagen roadsters. 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Porsche Cayman GTS

There is a possibility that at least one of the new flat-4 engines could make its way into the next-generation 911 as an entry-level model. A four-cylinder rear-engine Porsche isn't unprecedented; the automaker sold the four-cylinder 912 in the 1960s and 1970s.The new engines will likely be mated to a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch when fitted to the mid-engine Boxster or Cayman.
