The Kia GT concept from 2011 is back in the headlines after a report from Autocar suggests the concept was greenlit for production and scheduled for some time in 2016. But that's not all. A smaller sports car is also reportedly in the works, possibly based on the GT4 Stinger concept.

Research

For those who need a refresher on the GT Concept, the show car debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show with styling inspired by GT cars from the 1970s. Underneath the hood, the GT concept packed a turbocharged, direct-injected 3.3-liter V-6 that produced 390 hp and 394 lb-ft of torque, matched to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Although the concept made quite a splash at its debut, after the show the buzz quieted down. Another sporty Kia, called the GT4 Stinger concept, debuted at the 2014 Detroit auto show. The 2+2 sports car was smaller than the GT concept, with two less doors and powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 that churned out 400 hp. kia gt concept front three quarters© Provided by MotorTrend kia gt concept front three quarters

Kia said the GT4 wouldn't make it to production when it first debuted, but fast forward to the present day, and it appears there's been a change of heart. Autocar reports that, in addition to the GT concept, a smaller and cheaper coupe that could be something like the GT4 Stinger has also been given the greenlight.

Back to the GT, it's unknown whether a production version will keep the turbo V-6, though the report insists European-spec cars will be offered with a diesel. Although we don't expect the wacky concept car elements like the rear-hinged doors and fender-mounted rearview cameras to make it to production, it's likely the high-end Kia GT production car will keep the same fastback silhouette.

This all comes in an effort to push the brand's sporting image, and with two sports cars in the pipeline, it seems as though the automaker is pretty ambitious about its goal. Kia's sister brand Hyundai also recently expressed interest in a sports car model, and could decide to produce something like the PassoCorto concept that debuted in Geneva.
