Now that the 2016 Volvo XC90 crossover has been fully revealed, rumors of a new Volvo S90 sedan are beginning to surface. The upcoming Volvo S90 sedan will be aimed at the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, according to Auto Express.

Based on the automaker’s new SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) platform that also underpins the 2016 XC90, the Volvo S90 sedan will also be powered by the new line of Drive-E engines. In Europe, the S90 sedan will get the XC90’s 222-hp 2.0-liter twin-turbo diesel I-4 with 347 lb-ft of torque, while U.S.-spec models will likely only be available with gasoline engines from the Drive-E family.

In the 2015 Volvo S60, the new gas Drive-E engine options consist of a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 making 240 hp and 258 lb-ft, and a twin-charged (supercharged and turbocharged) 2.0-liter I-4 making 302 hp and 295 lb-ft. The 2016 Volvo XC90 gets a 316-hp version of the twin-charged engine as well as a plug-in hybrid model that adds a 60-kW, 80-hp electric motor at the rear axle. Combined output is rated 395 hp and 472 lb-ft.

Styling influence for the S90 sedan will come from the 2016 XC90, including the “Thor's Hammer” headlights and bold front grille design. Inside, the S90 will get the XC90’s Nappa leather seats, available Orrefors crystal shifter, real wood and aluminum trim, and Sensus touchscreen infotainment and vehicle control system.

The new S90 sedan is expected to arrive sometime in 2016 as a 2017 model.
