Mercedes-Benz announced last week it will launch a midsize pickup in global markets. Now, new reports suggest the model will use the same basic architecture as the Nissan Navara.

Research

The Nissan Navara, known in the U.S. as the Chevrolet Colorado vs. Nissan Frontier vs. Toyota Tacoma" target="_blank">Frontier, will provide Mercedes with a framework for its premium pickup, although both models will vary in terms of design and powertrain choices. Mercedes will reportedly supply its own four- or six-cylinder powertrains as well as interior materials and exterior design. However, the Mercedes truck would be produced in Nissan factories. Will the Mercedes-Benz Pickup Truck be Based on a Nissan?

The Wall Street Journal, speaking with two anonymous sources familiar with the matter, reported that the talks between Nissan and Mercedes are at an "advanced stage." Nissan, however, has not commented on the alleged partnership. Renault-Nissan and Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler entered a technology-sharing partnership in 2010, which includes sharing of platforms and powertrains.

As we reported earlier, the new Mercedes pickup will arrive before 2020 in South America, Australia, Europe, and South Africa. It will feature a body-on-frame architecture and will be able to accommodate 2200 pounds of cargo. When announcing the new vehicle, Mercedes-Benz Vans boss Volker Mornhinweg said the pickup will help expand the brand's product range and will offer the "comfort, safety, and design of a Mercedes-Benz passenger car." The automaker said the new pickup will be produced "in large numbers," but it still hasn't decided whether or not to bring the model to the U.S.
