26 Cars With the Best Gas Mileage

GOBankingRates Logo By John Csiszar of GOBankingRates | Slide 1 of 31: According to the most recent figures from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average American consumer spends over $1,900 per year on gasoline and motor oil. Over five years, that adds up to nearly $10,000 in fuel and oil costs. With gas prices subject to regular fluctuations based on supply and demand, geopolitical tension and other factors, those costs can skyrocket with little warning at any time. Thus, it pays to choose a fuel-efficient car to help reduce the pain at the pump.
Using data from FuelEconomy.gov, GOBankingRates analyzed the fuel efficiency of popular car models to compile a list of 26 vehicles that offer the best gas mileage. This list is split into four sections: cars, SUVs and minivans, trucks, and electric vehicles, all of which offer the best Environmental Protection Agency ratings in their class. Gas prices were based on the national average fuel price of $2.72 per gallon as of July 31, 2019, sourced from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.
As the data makes clear, there’s no comparison when it comes to the fuel efficiency of an electric car. However, plenty of gas-powered models also boast admirable figures in terms of miles per gallon. Even the SUV category, which used to be filled with notorious gas guzzlers, now provides a wide range of fuel-sipping models. No matter what type of car you’re shopping for, the options on this list can help lower your annual gas bill.
