EPA fuel economy numbers are starting to filter in for Jeep's new compact SUV. When paired with front-wheel drive, a 2.4-liter engine, and a nine-speed automatic, the 2015 Jeep Renegade is rated at 22/31 mpg city/highway for a combined 25 mpg.

Unlike other mini-crossovers on the market, the Renegade offers a potent 180-hp 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine as an option (standard with Limited and Trailhawk trims). That is probably why ratings for this combination come in lower than the 31-mpg Honda HR-V, the 30-mpg Nissan Juke, the 29-mpg Chevrolet Trax, and the 28-mpg Mini Cooper S Countryman. Quoted fuel economy numbers all apply to models with automatic transmissions.

Numbers for the standard 160-hp 1.4-liter turbocharged engine have not yet been released, nor have figures come out for all-wheel-drive models. Still, the initial batch gives us a good indication of what to expect from the rest of the lineup.

Jeep already announced the Renegade will start at under $18,990 (including destination) when paired with the 1.4-liter engine. Four-wheel drive is a $2000 option on the Sport, Latitude, and Limited trim levels, while standard on the off-road-oriented Trailhawk. The Renegade goes on sale later this year.
