Mazda began production of the all-new 2016 MX-5 Miata today at its plant in Hiroshima, Japan. Unfortunately, these first models are only destined for the Japanese market.

Customers in Japan can even make an appointment with Mazda for "pre-sale discussions" on the Miata beginning March 20. The Miata goes on sale in Japan around June before arriving in the U.S. right after.

As if you didn't know by now, the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata features a new Skyactiv drivetrain and new Kodo design language that brings it in line with other models in the automaker's lineup. While the U.S. Miata receives a 2.0-liter Skyactiv inline-four cylinder engine good for 155 hp, Japan gets a 1.5-liter inline-four base engine producing 131 hp. The next-generation Miata is shorter yet wider than its predecessor, and also weighs over 200 pounds less. Inside, the Miata comes with upgraded interior materials and a Mazda Connect infotainment system.

Globally, the model remains the world's best-selling two-seater sports car, having exceeded 950,000 sales as of the end of this January. Given the perennial popularity of the model, we expect another announcement coming from Mazda in the near future about the Miata hitting the one million sales mark.
