The next-gen Mercedes-Benz E-Class has stepped out once again, but this time we were able to get a closer look at its revised face. Even up close though, it's still hard to determine what's hiding underneath the very heavy camouflage. Still, we can still begin to speculate based off other details.

Research

Although we can't see the car's lines with this prototype, we can expect the next-gen E-Class to sport styling similar to the new S- and C-Class. The oversize grille on the prototype gives that away, since it resembles the one found on the smaller C-Class. The E-Class will be based on a slightly longer and wider version of the C-Class' MRA platform, which means it'll be lighter and more rigid since that platform uses lightweight materials. The new platform is expected to grant more room for passengers thanks to a longer wheelbase and slightly increased width and length. Like the 2015 C-Class, we expect more of the current S-Class sedan’s technology and refinement to find its way into the next E-Class. Powertrain details are still unknown, but we expect the next-gen E-Class to offer the automaker’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo V-6 that’s already making its way into Benz’s current lineup like the 2015 C-Class, in which it’s been tuned to produce 329 hp. Also expect the option of a twin-turbo V-8, a plug-in hybrid, and a high-performance AMG variant. Mercedes’ new nine-speed automatic transmission should also make an appearance. The gearbox has already launched in Europe in the E350 Bluetec, replacing the previous seven-speed auto box to help increase fuel economy and acceleration.

Look for the next-gen E-Class to debut in 2016 as a 2017 model.
