Official: Mini Confirms Coupe, Roadster Are on Their Way Out

We've known that Mini was planning on shrinking its lineup down from eight models to five, and it's finally made its first move toward that goal. The quirky brand has officially announced the Coupe and Roadster two-seaters will be discontinued.

Research

The news shouldn't come as too big a surprise, seeing as their days became numbered after Mini launched the third-gen lineup with the new 2014 Cooper. Available in three- and five-door versions, the new Cooper utilizes a completely new architecture, one which will also underpin an updated Clubman scheduled for debut sometime this year. A new Countryman will also undergo the same transformation, and with the automaker wanting to consolidate the lineup down to five models, there's just no room for the Coupe and Roadster. With that, both small cars will make the best of 2015 -- their final model year.

Although both the Coupe and Roadster had a short run, it was a pretty good one. We enjoyed having the 2013 Mini Coupe S in our long-term fleet, and it proved to be reliable during the year we had it. "Through responsive steering, a well-balanced chassis, high grip, and a sweet shifter, the Coupe felt constantly ready to go, always looking for curves to bomb through," we said in our Cooper S Coupe verdict. "It strives to be different in every way, even in the way it sounds, making a distinct rattle on idle and a cute little succession of backfires when you lift off the throttle. It celebrates its many eccentricities right in your face."

We liked the Coupe even better in John Cooper Works guise, calling it the most entertaining Mini ever. "It isn't its speed, everyday usability, or fashionable design that makes it so. Rather, the Coupe's high-grip, punchy-powered, and overexcited personality fused with usual Mini cheekiness earns it the title," we said in our First Test. As for the roadster, we called the chop-top Coupe an "affordable British sports car."

With the two models axed from the lineup, Mini now has the liberty to introduce new products, such as the rumored electric vehicle and Mini Minor city car.
