The Autobiography trim has become a luxury staple for the Range Rover brand over the last 21 years, and its latest iteration, the Autobiography Black, hopes to continue in the same vein. Now, Land Rover takes a looks back at the history of the prestigious badge.

We first saw the Autobiography when it was unveiled at the 1993 London motor show, intended for the 1994 model year. The first of these models were completely bespoke, offering customers a seemingly unending list of customizable color and interior options. With demand so high, Range Rover made the Autobiography models limited editions to keep them exclusive and added a larger engine and the latest technological features.

By the third generation in 2002, Land Rover introduced a high-quality audio package with a multi-play DVD system, along with more customizable features like the color of the sheepskin rugs and the wood used in the trim. However, if a customer wanted even more exclusive options, they just had to ask.

The next generation of the Autobiography trim revealed in 2011 was geared toward the chauffer market. As the most expensive version yet at just under $177,000, the 500 Autobiography model showcased even more upscale appointments.

Now, we have the Autobiography Black, featuring a lightweight aluminum body prepared by the company's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) outfit. It uses high-quality materials to offer a modern and customizable design with different interior options like executive twin rear-seats with an extended center console.

"For 21 years, Autobiography has given our customers the chance to specify the most luxurious Range Rovers according to their tastes and desires. Within Special Vehicle Operations we are continuing this tradition. The latest Autobiography Black has greater levels of luxury and sophistication than ever before and even more opportunities for personalization," said SVO chief John Edwards in a release.

All current and future Autobiography models will be under the care of the SVO team, which is relocating to a new tech center where it will now feature a customer commissioning suite for further personalization. It will also offer a fully automated paint facility and flexible workshops.
