The Chevrolet Malibu has had to play catch-up in the past to stay competitive with the rest of the midsize sedan segment, and now, the 2016 Malibu may finally be on track. Chevrolet has promised that the new model will not only offer better exterior and interior styling, but will be larger and offer better fuel economy. However, Chevrolet will not be offering a V-6, instead relying on turbochargers. But how does its new look compare to the outgoing Malibu?

For the new model year, Chevrolet modernized the exterior of the Malibu with better proportions and slight design enhancements. While the Malibu and Impala may share a platform, the Malibu has a lower ride stance which gives it a sportier appearance. Chevrolet also implemented high-strength steel to save weight and increase performance. The roof has been tweaked thanks to the new dimensions, and now stretches farther back, offering more headroom for rear passengers.

Compared to the outgoing model, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu features a new swept-back headlight design along the front fenders with LED DLRs for an added modern touch. With a lower hood than the previous model, aerodynamics has improved. At the rear, the taillights have also been updated, and are more streamlined than the boxy design that can be seen on the 2015 model. The sculpted body lines give a more angular look to the new Malibu, especially with the longer body, further separating the two models.

Inside, upscale materials surround the cabin, along with an updated center stack. Chevrolet has done away with the rounded design and utilized a cleaner, more streamlined design, showing off a new touchscreen and simpler control layout. It's not as bulky as the outgoing model, and features more content, including the new Teen Driver feature, which monitors teen driving habits.

Chevrolet has brought the next-gen Malibu into modern times with a more sophisticated design and competitive technology, efficiency, and comfort offerings. Can the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu better compete with or surpass its competition? Let us know in the comments below.

Last week's Refreshing or Revolting showcased the 2016 Jaguar XF, which was welcomed with a mostly positive reception.

"Refreshing. They gave attention where it was needed without messing up an already beautiful exterior," said Stew.

"Refreshing, all that was good about the old XF with some weight loss thrown in for good measure," said alpha tango victor.

"Disappointing. The essence of a Jag is beautiful, sexy styling. The XF looks like a spiced up Lexus. People buy a Jag for its curvaceous styling - the XF will not convince anyone," said andrewekerr.

"Refreshing. The car does not offend from any angle. Clean, classic sedan lines," said oratapss.
