Volkswagen detailed a series of new technical innovations that the company hopes will help it become the "world's most sustainable carmaker" by 2018. Some of the most notable advancements we can expect on future VW vehicles include a 10-speed automatic DSG transmission and a high-performance 2.0-liter TDI engine with an electric turbocharger.

Research

Volkswagen is unveiling a 10-speed DSG automatic transmission for engines with as much as 405 lb-ft of torque. We first heard about this plan last year in Vienna from company chairman Martin Winterkorn, and while we know the new tranny will reduce fuel consumption, we still don't know which vehicles will receive the feature. A number of automakers are offering nine-speed automatics and are preparing to introduce 10-speeds to the market, but VW seems to be unique in its plan to offer a DSG with such a high gear count.

The company is also continuing its aggressive diesel rollout with a variety of new high-performance diesel engines. The automaker recently introduced its most powerful four-cylinder TDI engine ever in the new Passat. In the future, this engine could put out even more power with the use of an "electric booster," variable valvetrain, and improved gas exchanged cycles. VW says this innovation can boost power to 272 horses, an increase of 32 hp over the current powertrain. Few details are given on that electric booster, but expect it to supplement a traditional exhaust-driven turbo.
