The Chevy Bolt EV earned a five-star rating from one crash-test agency but only average results from the other. While the all-electric hatchback is available with several active-safety features, they can only be had on the more expensive Premier trim.

What's New for 2019?

The Bolt EV is now programmed to operate more safely in the Low driving mode, which is activated using the electronic shifter. Chevy revised the setting so that when the vehicle is stopped and the seatbelt is unbuckled, the car will remain stationary. Also, as in previous model years, if the door is opened in this situation, the Bolt will put itself into park. The Bolt also adds a tire-fill alert that makes audible and visual signals when the recommended air pressure is reached while filling the tires with air. Otherwise, it has the same roster of safety and driver assists for 2019, and its NHTSA rating has not changed.

Crash-Test Results

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the nonprofit, independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluate vehicles for crashworthiness in the United States. NHTSA assigns cars an overall rating out of five stars. IIHS uses a different set of tests, grades cars on a scale of Good to Poor, and awards the vehicles that perform best across its tests with Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ honors, the latter of which requires that the subject's automated forward-collision-braking system performs well.

Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

As with most hybrids and EVs, Chevrolet provides extra coverage for some of the Bolt EV's electric-powertrain components. Chevy also includes the bonus of two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, but overall coverage doesn't come close to that of the Kia Soul EV.
