The 2019 Chevrolet Impala offers a soft and balanced ride, a good predicted reliability rating, and an abundance of passenger and cargo space. However, it only ranks midpack in the large car class because of its run-of-the-mill cabin materials and underwhelming base engine. 

Is the Chevrolet Impala a Good Car?

The 2019 Chevy Impala is a pretty good large car. It has a well-balanced ride, good maneuverability, and seats that offer all-day comfort. However, its base four-cylinder engine delivers insufficient power to easily move the sedan. This Chevy is one of the roomiest cars in the segment, with abundant passenger room and a large trunk. The infotainment features are easy to operate, but the cabin features some second-rate materials. 

Should I Buy the Chevrolet Impala?

Within the class, the 2019 Impala is a good value. Its roughly $28,000 base price is one of the lowest among large cars, and you get lots of standard features. That said, you may want to skip its weak base engine and pay another $1,095 to get the upgraded V6. Though the Impala is a good car for the price, you should check out some competitors. The Toyota Avalon costs about $7,650 more than the Impala, but it’s fully redesigned for 2019, comes with a ton of standard technology, and is more upscale. The Buick LaCrosse is more fun to drive, and like the Impala, it has a roomy cabin.

Should I Buy a New or Used Chevrolet Impala?

The 2019 Impala is part of a generation that started with the 2014 model. For 2015, a Wi-Fi hot spot became standard, and stop-start technology became standard with the base engine. The 2016 Impala gained available Apple CarPlay and wireless device charging, and 2017 Impala saw only minor changes to trim names. For 2018, Chevy made a rearview camera standard, along with the MyLink touch-screen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There were no major changes for 2019, so choosing a 2018 model could save thousands of dollars on essentially the same car.

How Much Does the Chevrolet Impala Cost?

The 2019 Chevrolet Impala starts at $28,020, which is one of the lowest base prices in the class. By comparison, the Buick LaCrosse starts at $29,570, while the Toyota Avalon has a much higher starting price of $35,650.

The Impala has three trim levels: LS, LT, and Premier. The LS and LT trims come standard with a four-cylinder engine, and a V6 is optional in both models for $1,095. The midrange Impala LT starts at $30,520 and has several packages available, ranging from about $500 to around $1,300. The top-of-the-line Chevy Impala Premier starts at $36,720. Adding packages and options can push the price above $40,000.

Which Is Better: Chevrolet Impala or Toyota Avalon?

The fully redesigned Toyota Avalon ranks a couple of spots above the Impala in the large car class. It comes standard with a V6 engine that matches the Impala's available V6's power, but the Avalon gets better gas mileage. Both cars have similarly cushioned rides. Inside, the differences are more apparent. The Avalon's cabin features first-rate materials throughout. It comes with a number of standard features the Impala doesn't, including synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control. It also comes with three more USB ports than the Chevy, as well as many driver assistance features, including adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, and automatic emergency braking. You can get an Avalon with a head-up display, a surround-view parking camera system, and reverse automatic braking – none which are available in the Impala. The Avalon is a great car, but its steep starting price of $35,650 is topped in the class only by the Avalon Hybrid. If you're looking to spend less, the Impala is still a good choice.

Which Is Better: Chevrolet Impala or Buick LaCrosse?

The 2019 Buick LaCrosse is one of the top performers in the class. Its standard mild-hybrid powertrain produces not only admirable fuel economy but also quick acceleration from a stop. For those who want more power, a muscular V6 engine is available. The LaCrosse feels more poised through turns than other large sedans, but it doesn't sacrifice passenger comfort or ride quality. Both cars have similar standard features lists and plenty of back-seat room. The Impala gets you a larger trunk, but the LaCrosse has a nicer cabin. At any trim level, the LaCrosse is priced higher than the Impala. So while the Buick is a class leader, the Impala's excellent value makes it a more viable option for many shoppers.

How Many People Does the Impala Seat?

The Chevrolet Impala seats five people with adult-friendly space in both rows. This full-size sedan has one of the largest back seats in the segment, giving taller passengers enough room to stretch out and relax. Up front, the driver enjoys a commanding view of the road ahead, though visibility to the sides and around turns is compromised by thick roof pillars. The front seats deliver adequate comfort for long drives, but side support is lacking.

Cloth upholstery and a power-adjustable driver's seat are standard. You can upgrade to comfort amenities like genuine leather seats, heated and/or ventilated front seats, and a power-adjustable passenger seat.

Impala and Car Seats

The Impala has a complete set of LATCH car-seat connectors for both outboard rear seats. The middle seat has a top tether anchor and a lower anchor on the passenger side, which you can use in conjunction with the lower anchor from the driver's side seat. Note that if you put a car seat in the middle position, you won't be able to put one on the driver's side. 

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this LATCH system a rating of Acceptable for its ease of use. IIHS notes that all the lower anchors are buried deep in the seat and hard to reach. There's little room to move your hands around the anchors when going for the middle-seat attachments. On the bright side, it doesn't take much effort to attach the car-seat straps to the anchors.

Impala Interior Quality

Overall, the Impala has a nice interior quality. The cabin design is sleek and modern, with simple lines and an intuitive dash layout. However, there are some cheap-feeling plastic trim pieces that detract from an otherwise upscale atmosphere.

Impala Cargo Space

The Impala's 18.8 cubic feet of trunk space dwarves nearly every class rival. The 2018 Buick LaCrosse has 15 cubic feet, and the 2019 Toyota Avalon has around 16. You should have no problem loading several large suitcases or lots of bags from a shopping spree. The Impala's second row folds down nearly flat in a 60/40 configuration to let you haul long items. The trunk’s large and wide opening further increases the car's utility.

Impala Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

The Impala’s relatively low price tag doesn’t prevent it from having an array of impressive standard features. Highlights include proximity key entry, push-button start, and the laudable MyLink infotainment system with an 8-inch touch screen, three USB ports, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and satellite radio. This interface is easy to use and quickly registers your touch to process commands. You can also take advantage of the standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay systems to connect your smartphone to MyLink. One hiccup is that the touch screen can be a little hard for the driver to reach. Chevy includes lots of physical buttons and knobs below the touch screen so you can easily adjust the volume and climate or scroll through radio stations. These buttons are clearly laid out and marked.

Moving up the trim ladder and adding packages gets you additional options like remote start, dual-zone automatic climate control, a dual-pane sunroof, a 120-volt power outlet, navigation, and an 11-speaker Bose surround-sound system.

Impala Performance

Impala Engine: 4 Is Too Few

The 2019 Chevrolet Impala comes standard with a four-cylinder EcoTec engine that puts out 197 horsepower and 191 pound-feet of torque. This engine struggles to move the large four-door around. A better match for this car's size and heft is the optional V6 engine, which makes 305 horsepower and 264 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain delivers ample muscle to get the Impala up to highway speeds and give you the extra oomph to pass other cars. You'll also appreciate the extra power when taking off from a stop, especially if you have a car full of people or cargo.

Both engines are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, which receives mixed reviews. While some critics say that shifts are smooth and quick, others think it's not as refined as it should be.

Impala Gas Mileage: OK

With its standard engine, the 2019 Impala gets an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. Those numbers are about average for the class. The V6 is only slightly less efficient, earning 19 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. The V6 would cost you about $250 more per year in fuel than the four-cylinder.

The 2019 Toyota Avalon comes standard with a V6 that gets better mileage than the Impala's I-4, earning 22 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. The 2018 Buick LaCrosse's V6 is also more efficient than the Impala's comparable engine, earning an estimated 25/35 mpg.

Impala Ride and Handling: Well Balanced

The Chevy Impala delivers a great balance of driving dynamics. It shares lots of steering components with the sporty Chevy Camaro, making parking and maneuvering through tight spaces easy, despite the car's big size. The steering also has enough weight to keep you planted on the road as you take turns with confidence. Still, don't mistake the Impala for a sports sedan.

For the most part, the Impala boasts a comfortable and quiet ride. It absorbs most bumps in the road, and the cabin shuts out most road and wind noise. The optional 20-inch wheels, however, make the ride quality stiffer and increase road noise.

The 2019 Chevrolet Impala has a five-star overall crash test rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The car earned five out of five stars in the frontal and side crash tests and four stars in the rollover test. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave it the highest rating of Good in four crash tests and the second-highest rating of Acceptable in the driver-side small overlap front test. However, the IIHS gave the Impala's headlights the lowest rating of Poor for outward visibility.

Though many rivals are starting to include more active safety features as standard equipment, the 2019 Impala only comes standard with a rearview camera. Optional advanced safety tech includes rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning. Most of these optional features are only available in packages offered with the two higher trims.

The Impala measures 16.75 feet from bumper to bumper. Its curb weight is between 3,681 and 3,811 pounds.

Which Chevrolet Impala Model Is Right for Me?

The 2019 Chevrolet Impala is available in three trims: LS, LT, and Premier. The LS and LT come standard with a four-cylinder engine; a V6 is optional. The Premier trim is only available with the V6. All Impala models feature front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission.

Though the base model comes equipped with lots of cool features, it may be worth upgrading to the midrange Impala LT, which is available with several optional packages. We suggest going with the LT Leather package, which also requires purchasing the Convenience package. Together, those bundles add genuine leather upholstery, a power-adjustable passenger seat, heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. If you go with either the LS or the LT, you should also spring for the V6 engine over the weaker-performing four-cylinder.

Chevrolet Impala LS

The 2019 Chevrolet Impala LS starts at $28,020. Standard features include a rearview camera, an 8-inch touch screen, Bluetooth, three USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, satellite radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, a Wi-Fi hot spot, cloth and vinyl upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, proximity keyless entry, and push-button start. Upgrading to the V6 engine costs $1,095. Remote start is optional for $325.

Chevrolet Impala LT

The 2019 Impala LT retails for $30,520. Additional standard features in the LT include dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and a genuine leather-wrapped shift knob and steering wheel. As with the LS, the V6 engine is a $1,095 option.

For $1,275, the Sunroof and Spoiler package adds a dual-pane sunroof and a rear spoiler. The LT Leather package costs $1,195 and includes genuine leather upholstery and an eight-way power-adjustable passenger seat. To get heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a 120-volt household-style power outlet, add the $875 LT Convenience package. The LT Entertainment package retails for $835 and comes with navigation, an 11-speaker Bose surround-sound system, and a 120-volt household-style power outlet. Lastly, the $495 Driver Convenience package gets you features like rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert.

Some packages may require upgrading to the V6 engine and/or adding additional packages.

Chevrolet Impala Premier

The Chevy Impala Premier starts at $36,720. The Premier trim adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, an eight-way power-adjustable passenger seat, a Bose surround-sound stereo, a 120-volt household-style power outlet, navigation, rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross traffic alert. For $1,275, the Premier Confidence package adds adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, and lane departure warning. The $935 Premier Convenience package includes ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel. A dual-pane sunroof is optional for $1,050.

The Final Call

The 2019 Chevrolet Impala is a roomy car, offering a large trunk and good seating space to stretch out. Despite some subpar cabin materials, the Impala's interior impresses with a generous number of standard features, including a user-friendly infotainment system. It has a good predicted reliability rating to boot. However, its base engine is underpowered. The Impala is worth considering, but a few rivals are more appealing overall.
