Final Confederate Monument In New Orleans Removed

The last of four Confederate-era monuments has been removed by workers in New Orleans. The statue of General Robert E. Lee was lifted from its pedestal early Friday evening. After the 2015 massacre of nine black parishioners in a South Carolina church New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu had proposed the removal of the monuments. Mayor Landrieu said the monuments had been erected after the Civil War by those who wanted to prove that white supremacy still had a say in the city. In a speech on Friday, Landrieu said the Confederacy was "on the wrong side of humanity."
