March 17, 1919: Nat King Cole is born

With over a hundred songs in his repertoire, including "The Christmas Song," "Mona Lisa" and "Nature Boy," the jazz musician and his ensemble defined the genre for generations to come. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, he was the first African American to host a nationwide TV show, "The Nat King Cole Show" on NBC. He died of lung cancer in 1965.
