Magikarp Jump.

If you’re itching for a new Pokémon game, there’s one out on iOS and Android right now. Be forewarned: whatever you thought it was going to be, it’s probably not that. Magikarp Jump is a Tamagotchi-style game about training Magikarp to, well, jump. Essentially, you fish up a Magikarp and then feed it berries and send it to train in order to increase its “Jump Power” so it can compete against other Magikarp in a series of leagues, jumping as high as it can. Other Pokémon such as Pikachu also make cameo appearances as support characters.

It’s all oddly charming, from the clever deployment of the original sound effects and music to the simple but effective visuals. It’s a clicker, at the end of the day, but a perfectly enjoyable clicker, fine for whiling away the seconds eating berries. To those less familiar with the series, Magikarp has a reputation for being more or less useless, but it’s become sort of well known for just that reason.  Magikarp Jump is an homage to the little creature’s longstanding fame/infamy., but is anyone surprised by that?

Like Pokémon GO and Pokémon Duel before it, Magikarp Jump is a 100% official Pokémon game, it just nothing to do with Nintendo. Nintendo does not directly own the brand, which is why Pokémon is a little looser with mobile games and licensing in general.

It may be a tiny, weird little title, but in many ways, this is the beauty of the Pokémon world. It can support all different kinds of stories through games and otherwise, and it feels just as at home with the sort of large-scale plots of the mainline games as it does with a strange fixation on an ineffectual fish. Magikarp Jump will never be a blockbuster on the level of some of the top sellers on the apps store, but that’s alright. It’s a weird little game about getting a fish to jump as high as you can, and that’s enough for me.
