Karina Smirnoff reveals past struggle with eating disorder

6/13/2014

Dancing With The Stars pro Karina Smirnoff has opened up about her past battles with eating disorders, revealing she went to extremes in a desperate bid to maintain a tiny figure during ballroom dance competitions. The Ukrainian dance pro is known for her sexy figure on the dance floor, and before her stint on DWTS, she spent years competing in professional ballroom competitions. Having won the U.S. National Championships five times, she was also crowned the World Trophy Champion - and while she smiled for the judges, she was hurting inside thanks to the pressures of trying to maintain a svelte figure. In an interview with OK! Magazine, the 34 year old reveals her past eating habits, and how her issues almost led to a debilitating disease. She admits, "I think for a while I had a certain degree of anorexia because I wouldn’t eat anything, I would just drink water and put detoxifying products into it so it would clean out my body. I didn’t eat for two weeks and after that I was so nervous because I was about to do a competition and I had no energy and my body started reacting in a way that I hadn’t experienced before." The season 13 champion soon experienced spasms, which signalled that her daily routine was no longer working. Although she maintains that she did not suffer from full-on anorexia or bulimia, Smirnoff attributes her current digestive and metabolism problems to her past dieting struggles. Smirnoff is currently competing in the 15th season of DWTS, with former winner, Apolo Anton Ohno.
