NTW - Diana Krall

Diana Krall, "Glad Rag Doll"
Our rating:
After dipping into Brazilian music on 2009's Grammy Award-winning "Quiet Nights," Krall changes tack again for "Glad Rag Doll." Working in cahoots with producer T Bone Burnett and a small combo including guitarist Marc Ribot, the Canadian jazz stalwart turns in loose, lively renditions of lesser-known material from the 1920s and '30s, with just a hint of electrified ambience to charge the atmosphere. "We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye" and "I'm a Little Mixed Up" may be unfamiliar to most Great American Songbook buffs, but their cadences and sentiments should resonate with anyone who appreciates the golden age of Tin Pan Alley. - K.B.R.
