Muse, "The 2nd Law"
Our rating:
Muse kick off their latest with what seems like an obvious bid to compose the next James Bond theme: "Supremacy" zigzags between Zep-heavy guitar riffs and frontman Matthew Bellamy's melodramatic vocals plied over cinematic strings. It wouldn't be the U.K. power trio's first big commission, either: "Survival," their over-the-top tune for the 2012 Summer Olympics pops up here, too. Bursting with operatic backing vocals and brass fanfares, "The 2nd Law" is overwrought but rarely underwhelming, and the integration of gut-rumbling electronics into "Unsustainable" and "Madness" adds a new wrinkle to the threesome's bombastic sound. - Kurt B.
