Russian punk band to have appeal heard

6/13/2014

The incarcerated members of Russian feminist punk band Pussy Riot will have their appeal heard in court on Monday (01Oct12). Three bandmates were arrested following an anti-Putin protest in Moscow earlier this year (12), and in August (12) they were sentenced to two years behind bars for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred. The trio has appealed the sentence and will appear before Moscow City Court on Monday. A spokesperson for the Russian Orthodox Church insists mercy could be shown to the rockers if they repent for their actions, which the band's lawyers doubt their clients will do. Their legal team has said the best case scenario would be for their tems to be cut by six months. Stars including Madonna, Green Day, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Patti Smith, Sir Paul McCartney, Sinead O'Connor, Yoko Ono and Bjork have all called on Russia's leaders to release the jailed trio.
