Shawn Johnson crushed over Dancing with the Stars partner's injury

6/17/2014

Dancing With The Stars contestant Shawn Johnson has been left crushed after learning her partner Derek Hough will miss next week's (05Nov12) performance show because of a painful neck injury. Last week (ends26Oct12), the Olympic gold medalist sprained the injured knee, which forced her to retire early from competitive gymnastics, and to add to her stress, her pro partner, Hough, is now sitting out the show. During Tuesday's (30Oct12) results show, host Tom Bergeron announced that Johnson's former partner from season eight, Mark Ballas, will be stepping in to work with her. But Johnson tells entertainment site Zap2it.com that although she adores Ballas, it was still very difficult to lose the one person who has been by her side throughout the all-star season. She admits, "Losing Derek today was heart-wrenching... Relating as a competitor and an athlete, I knew how hard the decision was for him... I've never seen that look on his face... It was just pain and frustration. It crushed me." Three-time champ Hough will still be in the studio as a choreographer, and Johnson believes he'll be back the following week to compete on the dance floor again. She adds, "You don't let another person step in to take over everything unless you're completely bowing out, and Derek is a fighter, he's as stubborn as I am. I know if he's not dancing on Monday, he'll be dancing next week for sure... I hope. I can only hope." As for her own injury, Johnson insists, "That is the least of my worries right now! I'm wrapping it up and it's good."
